Turkish Wine Grapes - Narince

Turkish Wine Grapes - Narince

You can call it the ‘Turkish Chardonnay’; they are similar in many aspects,  Narince is not as versatile and chameleonic as Chardonnay (or hasn’t been tried enough on so many grounds) but has a very good aging potential, a neutral flavour profile that can be transformed to many different wine styles and perhaps responds well to oak aging too, not that there are many examples but still.  Its best expressions come from Central Turkey, Cappadocia and Tokat region which is probably its birth place.

The grape is one of the constant ingredients in the ‘classic Turkish white blends’, together with Emir and Sultaniye. More on those blends later. But nowadays there are many experimental mono wines made with that variety, coming especially from the newly emerging producers.

Diren Narince, DLC Narince and Ancyra Narince presented in our portfolio are three mid-level, single variety wines which will give you the idea but perhaps the best example we are offering is KAV Narince 2020-2021.

We have tried that one and the respective vintages in many occasions, it is a good seller in the restaurants and pairs very well with wide variety of dishes. See the tasting notes and photographs below.

Doluca Kav Narince 2021 Tasted on 01.05.2023

A luscious, rich and well-rounded white made of indigenous Turkish variety Narince. A very good value (or high PQR) wine reminiscent of the structured Aussie Chardonnays or aged Burgundys. Expressive on the nose with a neat mineral touch, defined tropical and white stone fruits continuing to an complex palate low in alcohol but with enough body and fruit to elevate and sustain that exiting structure all harmonised by the superb acidity. Good pair for various dishes mushroom risotto, oily fish, shell fish, poultry, grills, roasted vegetables, casseroles and perhaps many more. (those are the ones we tried at least)

 In Short

Rich, structured with good fruit & acidity balance and medium + length.

 Tasting Notes Suggestions

Mellon, honey, pear, tangerine, grapefruit, wet stones, yellow hot summer days etc.
